Further confirmation that the Scripture is the Word of God.
Originally, within the Church, it was thought that the scriptures have only so much weight as conceded to them by the Church. This is incorrect.
The eternal and inviolable truth of God does not depend on the arbitrary will of men.
The Church is a good thing as an environment to lead people to God and to the scriptures, but it is not an ultimate authority.
God is not to be found through reason or arguments, but through the Spirit.
Scripture can never be understood except through the intervention of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and minds. That alone is true faith which the Spirit of God seeds in our hearts.
Whenever we are disturbed at the small amount of believers in the world, we must remember that none, but those to whom it was given, have any comprehension of the mysteries of God.
Basically, Calvin is implying that we cannot know God's mysteries without the gift of grace.
