Book 1 - Chapter 8 Summary

Rational proofs to establish the belief of the scripture.

Calvin emphasizes that truth is not recognized by eloquence, because liars can be eloquent too.
In fact, Satan is the most eloquent liar.

The force of truth in the sacred Scripture is too powerful to need the assistance of verbal art. The power of God, not the wisdom of men, gives the force of truth. The scriptures have been preserved over the ages by God, not man.

The law and the prophets have had an influence, because they come from God. Even the least eloquent prophets spoke the truth of God.

There are some who question that Moses and the prophets wrote their books. Some even question that Moses existed (of course, there are some who question that Jesus existed).

Yet the law of Moses has been preserved by the providence of heaven rather than the endeavors of men. The Lord preserved his own word until the arrival of the Word made flesh, Jesus and the descending of the Holy Spirit on Paul, Peter, and the other apostles.

Satan has sought to destroy the scriptures and their influence on humanity, but the forces of heaven have prevailed.
