The Trinity as detailed in John’s chapter 13 of book 1 of the institutes is one of the great mysteries that are unique to our Christian faith. We may not be able to completely understand it however it is both wonderful and unique in all conceptualizations of God; and why not since it is God Himself who provided this revelation. Additionally, I feel that we should not forget that, throughout scripture, God provides very clear images of how He and His people of faith can interact to be effective in this world. Consider David standing before Goliath, note that he says: “ I come in the name of the Lord”. We know that the “Name of the Lord” is Jesus and it’s a transforming power in our lives as Christians. Note just a very few of the many Old and New Testament scriptures which reference the “Name of the Lord”.
Malachi 3 [1 v.] Then they who had reverence for the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that have reverence for the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
Micah 4 [1 v.] For all people will walk … in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.
Micah 5 [1 v.] And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
Zephaniah 3 [3 v.] For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
Romans 10 [1 v.] For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Acts 2 [1 v.] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Colossians 3 [1 v.] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Ephesians 5 [1 v.] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
John 12 [1 v.] Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
