I feel your analysis of, chapter 6, really captures the core point that Calvin has been working on. To quote your analysis: “To me, this chapter describes the foreshadowing of Christ, since he is the Word. Most of humanity wandered in vanity and error until the Word was made flesh in our Lord and Master, Jesus.”
Just think, over four hundred and fifty years ago the challenges to a true knowledge of God were the same that we see today: indifference, ignorance, superstition, an improper impression that God is remote or non-interactive with His creation and ultimately a rejection that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our Savior. I like Calvin's analysis that God has provided divine scripture as the means to know Him. I interpret that to mean it is our vehicle to know Jesus Christ better through the Old Testament scriptures which look forward to His life/ministry and through the New Testament scriptures which record the life of Jesus and provide a divinely inspired interpretation of its meaning for our life and the life of the local church. I feel that God speaks plainly to us in scripture and we only get “off track” when we try to analyze “too much” the people or times involved. God speaks directly to us in scripture and all scripture points to God’s will for us in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
