The fanaticism which discards the Scripture under the pretence of resorting to immediate revelations, subversive of every principle of piety.
The title basically tells it all. Don't rely on your own understanding. Rely on scripture as your ultimate authority, because scripture comes from God and is God manifested through his Son and his prophets.
The apostles of Christ and other early believers were illuminated by the Holy Spirit, and they never condemned the Divine Word. They were rather filled with high reverence for it.
Paul, after he had been caught up in the third heaven, did not cease to study the doctrine of the law and the prophets.
We must read and study Scripture to receive the Spirit of God.
I like your analysis of chapter 9 and agree with the quote you pulled: "We must read and study Scripture to receive the Spirit of God" ... the study of scripture goes hand and hand with worship and prayer. I've been spending the last few week in Chapter 14 - it reviews creation, good angels, bad angels and our view of creation in the light of revelation from God. Without scripture we would not have a clear and sure source of God's intended communication to us. As John Calvin points out, in Chapter 14, without the light of revelation, through scripture, those bad angels are very active to change our perceptions of God's will. Something to think about. Peace, love and joy.
