Summary of Book 2 - Chapter 11

The Difference of the Two Testaments (Old & New)

There are four main differences emphasized by John Calvin.

1.  In the New Testament, we are directed to focus on our celestial inheritance - Heaven. In the Old Testament, the focus was on earthly blessings.

2.  In the Old testament, due to the absence of the truth (Jesus Christ), we see merely an image and shadow instead of the body (of Christ).

3.  In the Old testament, we have the law of God presented. In the New testament, we have the gospel of our lord and savior, Jesus Christ, presented.

4. The fourth and last difference arises out of the third. for the Scripture calls the Old Testament a covenant of bondage, because it produces fear in the mind; but the New it describes as a covenant of liberty, because it leads the heart to confidence and security.
