The Union of the Two Natures Constituting the Person of the Mediator
This is a short chapter that can be summarized quite simply.
Jesus is God. Jesus is Man. Jesus is one person. In heaven, he is one person. In hell, he is one person. On earth, he was, is, and shall be one person. No matter where he is, he is one person. There are some theologians who want to separate his divine and human nature. Calvin says to forget it!
Calvin quotes St. Augustine (who is starting to become one of my favorite theologians): "that it is an illustrious mirror of the wonderful and singular grace of God, that Jesus Christ, considered as man, obtained honour which he could not merit" Calvin continues this thought with: "From his very birth, therefore, was Christ adorned, even in his human nature, with the dignity of being the Son of God. Yet in the unity of person we must not imagine such a confusion, as to destroy that which is peculiar to Deity. For it is no more unreasonable, that the eternal Word of God and the man Christ Jesus, the two natures
being united into one person, should be called the Son of God in
different senses, than that he should be styled, in various respects,
sometimes the Son of God, sometimes the Son of man."
In quantum physics, light is a particle in some experiments and a wave in other experiments. Yet, light is one essence. The same with Jesus, with some experiments with us, he is God. With other experiments, he is Man. Yet, he is one person.
