The Consideration of Christ's Three Offices, Prophetical, Regal, and Sacerdotal, Necessary to Our Knowing the End of His Mission from the Father, and the Benefits Which He Confers on Us
Huh? Calvin gets carried away with his legalese sometimes. What is the title saying? Jesus was a Prophet, a King, and Our Great High Priest.
Jesus, as prophet, told us to take up our crosses and follow him. Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. A prophet translates God to us on earth. A prophet tells us how we must achieve salvation. Jesus told us that he was the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Jesus, as king (actually King of Kings), told us that his Kingdom was not of this world. His is a spiritual kingdom. The Kingdom of God is within you. Although, many of the Jews of his time wanted an earthly king, that was not his mission. He is the Messiah to end all messiahs. The Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, as high priest, is the head of his church. He is a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. A priest represents us to God. Jesus is our advocate at the heavenly throne. He is the mediator between God, the Father, and man. As our great high priest, he had to have a blood sacrifice to atone for the sins of man. He made himself that sacrifice. With his death at the cross, he placed a robe of righteousness around the members of the body of Christ to wash their sins as white as snow. When God looks at us, believers, he sees the glory of his Son.
